Flooding in Afghanistan and Pakistan (2013)

In August 2013 the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan were flooded due to rains. Over 160 people have died in the floods
Pakistan and Afghanistan are frequently hit by flooding during monsoon season. Since 2010, the region has suffered devastating floods that left hundreds dead each year. The worst flooding in the past 80 years occurred in 2010, when flooding in Pakistan resulted in more than 1,700 deaths and widespread damage.

Floods

Beginning July 31, 2013, parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan experienced unusually heavy rainfall that caused widespread flash flooding. Flood waters began to recede on August 5, but more heavy rain was expected later in August and September, the heart of monsoon season. All but one area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan was flood-free by August 5, as the waters receded almost as quickly as they had risen.

 Fasting and the Qur’aan

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Fasting and the Qur’aan will intercede for a person on the Day of Resurrection. Fasting will say, ‘O Lord, I deprived him of food and desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.’

The Qur’aan will say, ‘O Lord I deprived him of his sleep at night, so let me intercede for him.’ Then they will both intercede for him.”

Narrated by Ahmad, al-Tabaraani and al-Haakim; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 3882

MATHIRA WISHES PRESIDENT HAPPY BIRTHDAY

MATHIRA WISHES PRESIDENT HAPPY BIRTHDAY

The ever-controversial Mathira cannot stay away from the limelight. Be it her recently banned condom ad or racy photo shoots, this starlet is not one to shy away from criticism and attention. In her very own Marilyn Monroe moment, the official Lux Style Awards Facebook page posted a photo of Mathira holding a cupcake in her hand to wish President Asif Ali Zardari, whose birthday falls on July 26. A statement on the corner of the picture read: “Happy Birthday, Mr President.”

While speaking to The Express Tribune about her photo, which went viral just a few hours after its release, she exclaimed that the “birthday boy” should have a great time. “We remember Shahrukh Khan’s birthday, we remember Katrina Kaif’s birthday, but we never remember the birthday of the man who runs this country,” said Mathira.

Expressing her fondness for President Zardari, she said “the man has a personality.” “I really like that guy (President Zardari), I think he’s great. I wanted to do something special for him [on his birthday] and so I did.”

“The best thing about him is that he has a ‘personality’,” continued Mathira. “Believe it or not, he can turn heads around when he enters the room.”

“People and the media don’t see his positive side. We make jokes about him, we belittle him. We forget that he has the country’s responsibility on his shoulders.”

Mathira hopes that Zardari is elected as president for a second term, too. “We should not place blame on him for everything that goes wrong in the country. No one knows what he must be going through.”

Lizzie Velasquez

She has been ridiculed, stared at in the street and called 'the world's ugliest woman' by insensitive cyber bullies. But, after years of misery and self doubt, Lizzie Velasquez says she can finally shrug off the hurtful comments about her looks as 'just words'.
Miss Velasquez, from Austin, Texas, was born without adipose tissue - meaning she has no body fat and, despite eating up to 60 small meals a day, remains at a delicate 4.4stone (58lbs).

She told Dr Drew: 'I'm human... of course these things are going to hurt... (but) I'm not going to let those things define me.'Eventually Miss Velasquez realised the people issuing the hurtful comments online were just cowards hiding behind a computer screen.'At the end of the day, these are just words,' Miss Velasquez told Dr Drew. 'If they are so proud, then they should show their face.'When asked how she deals with being constantly stared at in the street Miss Velasquez said: 'I'm starting to want to go up to these people and introduce myself or give them my card and say, "Hi, I'm Lizzie - maybe you should stop staring and start learning".'Miss Velasquez also revealed she does not have any desire to look like a beautiful celebrity. She said: 'I feel I'm really glad I don't look like the celebrities out there who are beautiful, because there are a lot of stereotypes attached to that.'People think "she's so pretty, she must be really dumb". Since I don't look like that it's better because people can get to know the real me.'Miss Velasquez was born four weeks prematurely weighing just 2lb 10oz. Doctors found there was minimal amniotic fluid protecting her in the womb.'They told us they had no idea how she could have survived,' Miss Velasquez's mother Rita, 45, a church secretary, said.
'We had to buy dolls' clothes from the toy store because baby clothes were too big.' Doctors could not make a diagnosis so they prepared Miss Velasquez's parents for the worst.'They told us she would never be able to walk, talk or have a normal life,' said her mother, who has two other children with Miss Velasquez's father Lupe - both children are of average height and weight.Despite the grim prognosis Miss Velasquez's brain, bones and internal organs developed normally but she was always very small. At the age of two she was still only 15lbs - the same as the average five-month-old baby.

Born with two brown eyes, when Miss Velasquez was four the right began to cloud and change hue. Doctors then discovered she had gone blind in that eye.'They still don't know why it happened but now I have one blue and one brown eye.'

Miss Velasquez's case has fascinated doctors all over the world and she is part of a genetic study run by Professor Abhimanyu Garg at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Professor Garg and his team now believe Miss Velasquez may have a form of Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome (NPS), which causes accelerated ageing, fat loss from the face and body, and tissue degeneration. People with PRS often have triangular and prematurely aged faces with a pointy nose.

He said: 'I am aware of a small number of people that have similar conditions to Lizzie but each case is slightly different.
'We cannot predict what will happen to Lizzie in the future, as the medical community are yet to document older people with NPS.
'However Lizzie is lucky to have healthy teeth, organs and bones so the outlook is good. We will continue to study her case and learn from her.'
Miss Velasquez doesn't take medication but she relies on vitamin supplements and iron to stay healthy.  It is thought she should be able to conceive naturally without passing the condition to her children.

Make summer the season for saving energy

Make summer the season for saving energy

Whether replacing light bulbs or unplugging your unused cellphone charger, small changes can make a big impact on your electricity bill this summer and beyond.
Kristinn Leonhart, spokeswoman for the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program, said the average home has about 30 light fixtures, together consuming more electricity than a home's washer and dryer, refrigerator and dishwasher combined.
And because regular incandescent light bulbs emit heat, she said, using more-energy-efficient bulbs in your home's most-used fixtures makes a significant difference.
"Replace them with more-energy-efficient bulbs, which use less energy and produce about 75 percent less heat," Leonhart said. "They're good for cooling bills."
The two kinds of energy-efficient bulbs Energy Star certifies are compact fluorescent (CFL) and light-emitting diode (LED), both of which have longer life spans than conventional incandescent bulbs.
Another small change with major impact? Resetting the thermostat.
Cindy Olson, vice president of the green energy consulting firm Eco-Coach, said air conditioners are often left on when no one is home and set to temperatures lower than is necessary for comfort.
"It is something that is very personal," Olson said. "A lot of times, simply air movement is enough to be comfortable, even with just a ceiling fan."
Test how you and your family feel by adjusting the temperature up by one or two degrees at a time. Every degree of change, she said, can make a 2 percent difference on your utility bill. An air-conditioning system can account for 30 percent of an energy bill in the summer, according to power company data.
Updates in technology have made new central air systems, often with programmable thermostats, at least 15 percent more efficient than older models. If you aren't ready to replace your central air-conditioning unit altogether — the EPA suggests doing so if it is more than 10 years old — regular maintenance will ensure your unit is running as efficiently as it can. A dirty air filter, for example, can damage equipment and cause early breakdown.
"Dirt and neglect are bad," Leonhart said. "Check and clean your air filters every month, and change them, at a minimum, every three months."
Other big energy hogs are unused appliances. Whether you're going on a summer vacation or not, unplug coffeemakers, toasters and hair dryers, or invest in power strips with energy-saving features.
"My computer charger was pulling a huge amount of energy," Olson said. "Unused appliances make up anywhere from 10 to 15 percent of your bill. It's not doing you any good to leave anything plugged in if you aren't using it."
Both Leonhart and Olson also stressed weatherizing your home. If it's drafty in the winter, Olson said, it's still going to be drafty in the summer, letting cool air escape unless cracks or doors are sealed properly. And be sure to seal up heating and cooling ducts where air tends to leak, Leonhart said. Olson suggested having a professional inspect your home's heating and cooling system and make the repairs. Exposed ducts in crawl spaces, basements and attics are often fixed with duct sealants or metal tapes.
"People don't understand their energy bills," Olson said. "A few simple tips can make an incredible amount of difference."
Steps to a smaller bill
Cost-saving suggestions from the EPA and the Potomac Electric Power Co. (Pepco):
- Plant shade trees strategically around your home. Properly selected and planted shade trees can save up to $80 annually on the average electric bill.
- Reduce the temperature of your water heater. Setting it too high (140 degrees or higher, according to Energy Star) can waste anywhere from $36 to $61 annually.
- If you raise your thermostat setting by only two degrees and use your ceiling fan, you can lower your cooling costs by up to 14 percent.
- As much as 20 percent of the air moving through your home's duct system is lost through leaks, holes and poor connections. A professional contractor can identify leaks and fix them.

 NEWBORN ROYAL BABY BOY

LONDON — A beaming Prince William and his wife, Kate, emerged from a London hospital on Tuesday with their newborn baby boy, presenting the world with a first glimpse of the prince who is third in line to the British throne.
The royal couple, both 31, looked happy and relaxed as they waved at the crowds of journalists and onlookers gathered outside London's St. Mary's Hospital, posing for photographs and joking with reporters.
Kate, wearing a baby blue polka dot Jenny Packham dress, smiled and waved as she stepped out from the hospital doors with the future monarch in her arms.
"It's very emotional. It's such a special time. I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like," she told journalists.
Kate then gave the baby to her husband, who, cradling their child, said: "He's got her looks, thankfully. He's got a good pair of lungs on him, that's for sure."
William added: "He's a big boy. He's quite heavy," and laughed when a reporter asked him about the baby's hair.
"He's got way more than me, thank God," he said.
The couple also revealed that William has had a go at changing the infant's first diaper. "He's very good at it," Kate said.
The new parents drew whoops and excited applause from well-wishers as they revealed the newest member of Britain's royal family. William said they're still trying to decide what to name the little prince

IMPORTANT INFORMATION : MUST SHARE

A 21 year old girl had worn a pair of contact lenses
during a barbecue party.(An event or meal at which
food is cooked outdoors over an open grill or fire)
While barbecuing she stared at the fire charcoals
continuously for 2-3 minutes.
After a few minutes, She started to scream for help
and moved rapidly, jumping up and down.
No one in the party knew why she was doing this?
Then she admitted into the Hospital, the doctor said
she'll be blind permanently because of the contact
lenses that she had worn.
Contact lenses are made by plastics, and the heat
from the charcoal melted her contact lenses.
DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES WHERE
OVERHEATING and FLAMES are concerned....
or while COOKING...!
Friends if u feel the information is important, Please
